NOW IS YOUR CHANCE TO COMPLETE A CROSSING THAT FEW GET TO ACHIEVE. JOIN THE CREW OF OUR NEW DUFOUR 38 THIS AUTUMN AND SAIL ACROSS THE ATLANTIC FROM SPAIN TO THE BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS.
There can be no passengers aboard for this voyage. Every team member must become a part of the working crew, rotating positions from taking the helm and standing their watch to provisioning and cooking for their team. It will be challenging at times, and when the lines are finally tied to the dock, your sense of achievement will be immense.
We will depart from Denia (Alicante) and will sail down the Spanish Mediterranean coast towards the famous Strait of Gibraltar. Once on the other side, we will sail past Tarifa (home to windsurfers, kite surfers and other high adrenaline enthusiasts) and continue a bit further up the coast past the towns of Barbate and Zahara de los Atunes (both famous for their world renown tuna fish). We will finally arrive at our destination in this leg, Cadiz, the City of Light.
After replenishing and provisioning we will set sail toward Tenerife. Behind us the Iberian Peninsula and the Mediterranean Sea, we start our adventure by crossing the Gulf of Cadiz. On our starboard side we will salute Cape Trafalgar, site of the famous sea battle in the Napoleonic Wars. Our first days of real open sea sailing will be a good test for the rigours ahead. Without visible land, surrounded only by the blue ocean, we will sail southwest pushed by the winds and current of the Canaries. Rabat and Casablanca on our port side and a lot farther away on our starboard side, Madeira, we will sail on for a few days before we are in sight of land, and if we have fared well with the winds perhaps we will even have time for a quick visit to Lanzarote or Gran Canaria.
Finally we will head towards the Caribbean and start the final leg of our Atlantic crossing. After provisioning and making sure everything and everyone is ready, we will set sail on a course to Cabo Verde, searching for the famous trade winds. Once we meet them, we will turn west and allow them to push us through the Ocean towards Tortola in the British Virgin Islands. We will have between 2 and 3 weeks of sailing without any chance of anchoring or mooring. With the blue ocean surrounding us, we will fall into the daily routine of life on board a boat: shifts behind the wheel, watching for other ships on the horizon and for changes in wind direction, cooking, cleaning and even trying to fish.
